If the Church were the human body, Sacred Scripture would be one of its lungs.
We believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God written down by human authors under the infuence of the Holy Spirit. The Bible contains 2 parts: the Old Testament--everything before Jesus' birth, and the New Testament--everything after Jesus was born. Everything prophisized and spoken about in the Old Testament is completed and brought to fulfillment in and through Jesus and written about in the New Testament.
The Old Testament has 46 Books. It begins with the Book of Genesis and the story of Creation, and ends with the Prophet Malachi. It is divided up into sections: The Pentateuch, The Historcial Books, Psalms & Wisdom Literature, and The Prophets.
The New Testament has 27 Books. It begins with the 4 Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, which are the Life and Works of Jesus while He was on earth. Next is the Acts of the Apostles, "Part II" of the Gospel of Luke, which talks about the mission of the Apostles immediately following Jesus' Crucifixion. Following Acts, are the Letters of St. Paul and the other Apostles. The New Testament ends with the Book of Revelation, which speaks about the "End Time," and Second Coming of Jesus.
It was the Catholic Church at the Synod of Hippo in 393 A.D. that first codified the Scriptures that were being used in common in the New Testament and complied them with the existing Jewish Old Testament Scriptures into "The Bible" The Council of Trent in 1545, to give us the Bible that we have today! Catholic or not, if you've ever read a Bible, you can thank the Catholic Church!
