Summer is a great time to watch butterflies! If you haven't already gone outside and observed the butterflies, you definitely should. They are such wonderful pieces of God's creation. It is hard to imagine that all butterflies start as tiny eggs, each about the size of a pinhead. Becoming a butterfly is a very special thing because most eggs never get to that stage.
According to butterfly-fun-facts.com, 400 eggs can be laid by one adult butterfly or moth; out of those 400 butterfly eggs, only about 8 live to become adult butterflies. Nature kills about 98% before they become adults.
Many pre-adult butterflies die from predation, disease, weather, etcetera.
We also can fall prey to predators such as the devil if we are not careful. But if we rely on God and trust in Jesus we will not be harmed. But unfortunately, many do not know Jesus and don't trust in him. They are in danger of missing out on becoming butterflies.
"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
1 Peter 5:8
The ones that do make it to become butterflies are an amazing testament of life. All year-round butterflies are known to be symbols of life because of the rebirth they undergo in their chrysalis. Like those caterpillars that have gone into the chrysalis and emerged butterflies, we as Christian's through our baptism have emerged as new creations in Christ. The old doesn't live in us anymore, but the new.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
2 Corinthians 5:17
Everywhere a butterfly flutters it seems to joyously proclaim the new life it has been given. As Christian's everywhere we go we are to proclaim the new life we have in Jesus Christ. We are God’s chosen people, and we are meant to spread the good news to others.
"And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation."
Mark:16-15
Butterflies can be found all over the world just like God's chosen people he has called to himself. Like the Monarch butterflies there is a remnant that remains that has been chosen by grace. Those that are chosen are called to make this lifestyle journey to be with Christ forever.
"So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace."
Roman's 11:5
The Monarch butterflies that migrate to their winter breeding ground do not return for another big migration they live out the rest of their days in their new home.
All that we work for is to make it to be with God for eternity. There is no point in storing up riches here on Earth when we can have the Kingdom of Heaven instead. We want to reach that goal. Without Christ we are dead, but with Christ we are made new so we can be with him forever.
Our life’s final destination is to be with God forever.
